Five Cities, Twenty Tanks and One Verdict: Our Blind Crawl for Britain's Best House Flavour

Somewhere between a rainy Manchester tram stop and a Glasgow bus shelter, it hit us: nobody has ever properly settled the great British vaping question. Dessert or tobacco? Sweet tooth or smoke soul? So we did what any sensible publication would do — packed blind-labelled tanks, a notebook and far too many wet wipes, and went crawling.

Five cities. Four house flavours each, chosen by the shops themselves as their bestsellers. Tasted blind, scored honestly, argued about loudly.

Manchester: The Custard Fortress

The Northern Quarter shop that kicked us off was unequivocal. "Custard," the manager said. "Always custard. It's practically civic pride up here." She wasn't wrong — their house vanilla custard was thick, buttery and dangerously moreish. Our panel scored it 8.5/10, with one writer muttering about "a hug in vapour form."

Glasgow: A Curveball in a Kilt

We expected sweet. We got smoke. Glasgow's pick was a robust, slightly peppery tobacco with a honey finish, and it floored us. Score: 8/10, and a dented ego. "Nae bother," said the shop assistant, unhelpfully.

Cardiff: The Split Personality

Cardiff gave us a berry-and-anise hybrid that had our panel genuinely divided down the middle. Half tasted a liquorice twist worth 9/10. Half tasted, quote, "like a cough sweet fight." Average: 6.5, but the argument lasted to Newport.

Birmingham: Sweetness Overload

The Bullring-adjacent shop's house flavour was a strawberry doughnut affair — huge clouds, huge sweetness, zero subtlety. The 10pm version of our panel adored it. The 10am version wrote "6/10, needs restraint" in the notebook.

London: The Diplomat

Our final stop, a quiet shop off Brick Lane, served a balanced tobacco-vanilla blend that refused to pick a side. Nobody hated it. Nobody swooned. 7/10 — the Switzerland of the crawl.

So Which Twin Won Britain?

Tally it up and the dessert camp edged it on points — but only just, and only because Glasgow's tobacco masterpiece narrowly missed the crown on a technicality we've since forgotten.

Here's our honest take, though: the divide is the point. Britain doesn't have one vaping palate; it has two, living in the same person, taking shifts. The morning you wants the tobacco-honey. The 10pm you wants the custard. The smartest shops we visited stocked for both — and the smartest brands, Gemini Vapour included, bottle for both.

Our winner? Manchester's custard, by a nose. Our conclusion? You need both twins in the tank rotation. Don't tell one of them we said that.
