Seven Days, Two Unlabelled Bottles, One Very Confused Palate

There's a theory that keeps doing the rounds at Gemini Vapour: that most of us can't actually taste the difference between a £4 bottle and a £24 one, we just taste the price tag. It's an uncomfortable idea, a bit like being told your favourite football team is mostly luck. So we decided to test it properly.

The rules were simple. We took two bottles of the same flavour family — a dessert-ish custard number, since that's where palates get cocky — one from a budget shelf staple and one from a boutique outfit that names its liquids like perfume. We peeled off every label, decanted them into identical 30ml droppers marked only A and B, and handed them to Dev, a friend of the shop who's been vaping since the days when tanks leaked on principle.

Dev's job: alternate daily for seven days, log every verdict, and only then would we reveal which was which.

Day One: The Confidence Phase

Monday's log entry is a thing of beauty. "B is obviously the premium one. Thicker, richer, you can taste the care." He rated B an 8.5 and A a 6, noting that A had "a slight sharpness on the exhale, probably a cheaper sweetener."

We said nothing. B was, in fact, the £4.99 bottle.

This is the bit worth dwelling on. Dev wasn't guessing — he was describing. Specific vocabulary, confident reasoning, the whole toolkit of the experienced vaper. And he was describing a story his brain had written based on nothing at all.

The Middle of the Week Wobble

By Wednesday, something interesting happened in the log. The certainty started to crack.

"A is growing on me," he wrote. "Cleaner somehow. B feels a bit heavy after a full tank." Then, two hours later, an addendum: "Had a pint with B, it's lovely again. What is happening to me."

What was happening, of course, is context — the invisible third ingredient in every bottle. The same liquid hits differently after a curry than it does first thing with a coffee. It tastes different in a beer garden in October than it does in a stuffy office. Dev was discovering in real time that his palate wasn't a precision instrument so much as a mood ring.

There's a proper name for this in the wine world, where they've been embarrassing people with blind tastings for decades: expectation bias. Hand someone a glass with a fancy label and their brain literally reports a better flavour. Take the label away and even sommeliers get humbled. Vaping is no different, except our labels live in our heads — the brand we saw on Instagram, the price we remember paying, the bloke in the shop who said it's "proper juice."

Day Five: The Craving Variable

Friday's entry might be the most honest thing anyone's written about flavour. "Didn't fancy either today. Just wanted a fag for about twenty minutes after the morning meeting, then it passed. Vaped A anyway. Fine."

It's a useful reminder that we're not sommeliers chasing notes of bergamot. We're people managing a habit, and on a stressful day, liquid is liquid. The craving doesn't check the price tag. A lot of what we call flavour preference is really just flavour availability — whichever bottle is on the desk.

The Reveal

Sunday night, we told him. The log ends with a single line: "I've never been so annoyed at being right about the wrong thing."

To his credit, Dev didn't spiral. His conclusion, over a debrief brew the next morning, was more nuanced than either camp in this argument would like. "The cheap one was genuinely good. But the premium one had something — a texture, a length on the finish. Whether that's worth £20 extra is a different question. Whether I could identify it blind again is an even more different question."

So Does Price Matter?

Here's our honest take, for what it's worth. Premium liquids often do use better ingredients — smoother sweeteners, more layered flavour concentrates, proper steeping. On a good day, with a clean coil and a quiet head, you can pick that up. But the gap is nowhere near as wide as the gap in price, and context — mood, food, weather, who you're with — moves the needle more than most of us would like to admit.

The practical advice we gave Dev, and would give anyone:

The Twin Verdict

We call it the Twin Test because that's rather the point of this whole shop — two things that look identical, and the fun is in working out which is which. Dev couldn't, reliably, and neither could we when we ran the same experiment on ourselves the following week. That's not an argument for buying cheap. It's an argument for buying honestly: taste it, enjoy it, and stop letting the label do the vaping for you.

The mystery bottles have long since gone. Dev's now decanting his own favourites into unmarked droppers at home, just to keep himself humble. Frankly, we think that's the healthiest relationship with flavour we've ever heard of.
