Mud, Security Wands and One Flat Battery: Surviving Festival Season as a Vaper

There's a moment every festival vaper knows. You're through the gates, wristband on, the first distant bassline wobbling across a field in Somerset or Shropshire or wherever this year's fortune has deposited you — and you reach into your pocket for a quick puff before the trek to the campsite. Your tank is gone. Or cracked. Or filled with two parts e-liquid and one part artisanal Glastonbury mud.

Festival vaping is not shop vaping. It's a different discipline entirely, and the people who do it well have a code. We spent the early summer asking them about it — a folk weekend regular from Cumbria, a Reading veteran on her ninth year, and Dave, who runs a vape stall on the festival circuit and has opinions. Many opinions.

The Gate Is a Mental Game

Let's start with the thing everyone fears: security. The good news is that vapes and e-liquids are overwhelmingly allowed into UK festivals, including the big ones. The wand doesn't care about your menthol disposables.

What actually gets people is behaviour. "The ones who get pulled aside are the ones acting shifty," Dave told us, restocking a crate of 10ml bottles behind his stall. "Empty your pockets like a normal adult. Bottle of juice, device, done. It takes ten seconds. It's the fella who's hidden his vape in a sock who gets the full pat-down."

The real gate problem is glass. Most festivals ban glass bottles outright, and while your e-liquid usually arrives in plastic, check before you travel. And if you're bringing a bottle of something nice in glass for the evenings? Leave it in the car. It will not survive the campsite, and neither will the trust of whoever shares a tent with you.

The Kit: Pack Like a Cynic

Festival veterans pack for the worst version of the weekend. Here's the consensus kit:

The Charging Point Economy

Every festival has charging facilities. Every festival's charging facilities are a two-hour queue behind forty people charging phones for a festival's worth of Instagram. The veterans' advice is blunt: don't rely on them.

"I take a fully charged power bank and I treat it like rationed tea," says Reading veteran Sam, nine festivals deep. "Charge the bank at home, charge the device off the bank, and never — never — leave your vape on a communal charging dock. I've watched a perfectly good pod walk off at Leeds. Some people have no shame and excellent taste."

Cigarette-style USB ports in showers and welfare tents exist, but they're a lottery. Plan around scarcity, not availability.

Mosh Pit Etiquette, Vape Edition

Can you vape in a crowd of six thousand people jumping in unison to a band you half-remember from the 2000s? Technically, yes. Should you? The code says no — not in the thick of it.

"A cloud in a mosh pit is a curtain," Sam explains. "Someone behind you gets a face full of blue raspberry and now they're blinded and sticky. Vape at the edges. Vape at the barrier if you must, exhale down. Vape in the queue for chips, which is where all British dignity goes to die anyway."

The general etiquette, borrowed from smoking rules: treat indoor and tightly packed spaces as no-go, step aside for the perimeter, and never blow clouds deliberately across people. You're not in a pub garden in 2013. There are children in animal onesies watching you.

Weather, or: The British Variable

Nothing kills a tank faster than a weekend of horizontal rain followed by unexpected sun. Heat thins e-liquid and turns pockets into leak zones; cold and damp make batteries sulk and mouthpieces slick. Dave's advice is almost agricultural: "Keep your juice somewhere shaded and your device somewhere dry. A sandwich bag costs nothing. The amount of people who bring £40 kit and store it loose in a flooded tent, I'll never understand."

A dry bag or even a freezer bag lives in every veteran's rucksack. It's the least glamorous item on the list and the one they'd rescue first.

The Last Word

Festival vaping rewards the prepared and humbles the romantic. Bring the backup, charge the bank, pack the flavours you can bear to lose, and blow your clouds where the wind — and the crowd — won't mind. Do that, and the only thing you'll lose this summer is your voice, your wellies, and possibly the concept of time.

Which, let's be honest, is the festival deal anyway.
